  • Candidates List for 2024 Elections - Pascua Yaqui Tribe (10)Mateo Flores Jr.

As a Marine of 20 years, I attained the traits necessary to be an effective leader.I grew up in Penjamo village and spent a lot of my youth in Guadalupe. I am active in tribal cultural ceremonies and have participated in ceremonies in Guadalupe and Tucson.I have worked for the Pascua Yaqui tribal government. I have over 20 years of casino and gaming regulatory experience and held a casino director level position. The Pascua Yaqui is unique in that active membership extends outside of the reservation. The Pascua Yaqui Tribe’s constitution is outdated and requires revision to reflect the current membership. A restructuring of the election process to include term limits for previous, current and future tribal council members and separate election of tribal chairman and vice-chairman is needed.Strong communication with all tribal members is essential for continued tribal growth and unity. Decisions of the tribal council should be made in the interest of all tribal members regardless of where they live and to whose family they belong. Due to the distance between the Yaqui communities, consideration should be given to establishing districts to better serve the tribal members.I will strive to be a leader who inspires others to be the best they can be.

  • Candidates List for 2024 Elections - Pascua Yaqui Tribe (36)Robert Valencia

My decision to re-enter the election process was carefully discussed with my family taking into account the years of my public service and “unfinished business”. I have 26 years of public service experience starting at age 19 with the Pascua Yaqui Association in 1977. What I have learned since childhood has been my involvement with Pascua Pueblo or as it was referred to as “New Village” where I moved to in 1970. The house I lived in contained a number of my elders who had no other place to live. I learned so much about our “Yaqui work ethic” since they demonstrated the true elements of our, “yoem lu’uturia.” My elders taught me about everything involved in building a community, what we now call, “Nation Building.” This transcended the many advances in the building of many projects including the Casino del Sol, negotiating for the tribal compact (2002) that continued gaming in the state of Arizona, gaining the support of Arizona tribes to support our newest casino in Old Pascua which is a fabulous opportunity for the tribe and building infrastructure for buildings and programs we as Council have built. I will commit to continuing the work needed for all our communities, in particular, creating enhanced opportunities for our youth to flourish in both higher education and in the trades. Thank you for your support.

  • Candidates List for 2024 Elections - Pascua Yaqui Tribe (37)Robert “Funi Bear” Valencia Jr.

Lios enchim aniavu. We are fortunate to receive blessings and give thanks to Itom Achai O’ola, Itom Ae Virgen Guadalupana, and all who advocate on our behalf. I hope that you receive this message in good health and with many blessings. My name is Robert Valencia Jr., and I am humbly seeking your support for a seat in the Pascua Yaqui Tribal Council. I grew up in Barrio Libre and New Pascua communities and have been in the education field for over 18 years, working with preschoolers to adults of all ages. I’ve found that when we equip people of any age with high expectations, resources, and timely meaningful feedback, more often than not, people will surpass what they expected of themselves. Our elders left us many truths to abide by in our private lives and in our public lives. Some of these values are foundational to my leadership philosophy: treat everyone with respect, work together with a good heart, and be accountable to the responsibilities left in our hands. I believe that when we pair these truths with a growth-mindset, we can maximize our gifts to the benefit of our community. If elected, I’ll strive to utilize my strengths as an active listener, facilitator, and communicator to collaboratively process through our tribe’s successes and challenges. I look to strengthen the cultures across our dynamic Tribe to reflect the working philosophies of Itom Yoyo’owam Suka’um. Look for my inescapable nickname, “Funibear”, on the ballot. I’ve been married for 20 years to my wonderful wife, Adriana, and together we raise our three children. I grew up in New Pascua and I am an active cultural participant. With 25 years in IT, I’ve worked in Tribal Government, Casino Entertainment, and the schools for the Deaf and Blind, witnessing technology’s dynamic evolution and its potential to enhance lives while navigating challenges. My background in information technologies has prepared me to tackle the challenges we face head-on. I’m committed to promoting policies that prioritize the well-being and prosperity of all members of our communities, whether it’s improving housing, health, public safety to economic development. But most importantly, I’m here to listen. Your voices matter, and I want to be your advocate every step of the way.
