Synopsis
Speak her name and she'll follow you.
Mary Cherry Chua is based on a popular urban legend about a pretty high school lass named Mary Cherry Chua, who was reportedly murdered by the school janitor. The horror film centers on Karen (Ashley), who is fond of reading campus horror tales and urban legends.

Isang patay na estudyante ang nagmumulto. Bakit kaya?

Mary Cherry Chua is a very silly film. It reads like a Wattpad book adapted to the screen, with a plot that makes less sense the more you think about it.
1) did no one notice what happened to Faith? No announcements from the teachers? Nobody cared? None of the other classmates noticed? Does Karen's sister have a third eye, which is why she can see Faith? What was that all about?
2) no one is announcing the deaths of the teachers and staff either? Did everyone just assume they went on a vacation or something?
3) the teacher allowing the investigation into her death (which includes a seance, like how is that provable in a classroom setting??) is a⦠-

This movie have a good film in mind but confusion in formatting betrays it. A diamond in the rough which would have been saved by a bit of structural rearrangement. A missed opportunity at most. But it was fun where it counts, I just wish the film took its time establishing atmosphere.
Few hints of what we can take off and improve from: a localization of the Norman Bates trope, which is very apt with the current administration; further development in the merging of urban legends and amateur sleuths narratives (Mikhail Red's Eerie was a good model with a bad execution, this movie should have learned from its mistakes); and better roles for Lyca Gairanod, Krissha Viaje, and Kokoy de Santos.

It's hard not to nitpick these kinds of films. Everything's atrocious: from the acting to the technicals to even using Mary Had a Little Lamb as a theme song. There's this confident aura (for lack of a much better term) in its script where it feels like it's very proud of the twists its churning. Cast Joko Diaz and you'll know the twist. Blame Viva for that sh*t.
You get to question the reality of the film. It's okay to be fantastical, absurd, or heightened, but to be illogical can only make for a very frustrating viewing. One can say that horror films need not be complicated for one to enjoy - that you can even shut your brain downβ¦

It's a bit amusing at how the director managed to mix and match familiar horror elements and tried to effectively use a handful of them. The haphazard use of film logic gets a free pass at times, as the audience will eventually get the extent of whatever this can offer. To be fair, there are instances when the film tries to give a horror chill - but the effect is only a tinge of what it wanted to bring. Laying out the setup too much gets too obvious to a tee.
And while the climactic reveal gives the energy of inevitability, it's actually too obvious early on, the Scream-ish scene at the end gets the appropriate and acceptable mediocre vote.β¦
