Born the 2nd son of Harry and Gladys, there was never a dull moment or enough potatoes in their household.

The family lived above a bar/pool hall for several years before Gladys insisted it wasn’t the place to raise their 3 sons so Harry built them a nice small home, where the 3 boys shared a small bedroom until they left to start their own families. That brotherly bond remained a solid foundation for the rest of their lives.

He graduated from Volga High School and attended SDSU for a short time before starting a family.

Doug was genuine, honest, and friendly – always a kind person to everyone he met. The person you saw on television was the same person you would meet on the street.

He and Linda dated for over four years before Doug popped the question but not before checking with the kids to get their blessing. It was a perfect match. They married on June 24, 1984, surrounded by their five children and first grandchild. Because of their love and commitment to family, they built a legacy of love that expanded to 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Every one of them is sure of the love of Daddy/Grandpa Doug.

Doug loved music and in high school, he and cousin Larry (“Grouse”) Gruseth started a band playing rock and roll. They loved the Everly Brothers and practiced many hours to learn to play the guitar and harmonize. They even got to play at one of their high school dances. Later Doug would take up the drums and that was his instrument for the rest of his career. He had a beautiful voice and there wasn’t a song he didn’t know. He played and sang in a variety of bands until he just couldn’t keep up the pace anymore. He travelled most weekends with Phil James playing old-time music at places like the VFW and weddings for several years before joining Mogen’s Heroes. That quartet became some of Doug’s most beloved lifelong friends.

Doug was an avid golfer enjoying time with his brothers and many good friends. He achieved the ultimate golfing goal of a hole-in-one, not once but twice in his career. Lucky granddaughter, Tara, was his witness.

Doug loved his work as an anchorman at KELO TV. He always said it was his dream job and he was so lucky to get to do what he loved for more than 30 years. Everyone there was part of his extended family. Until just last year he felt privileged to be the voice of KELOLAND. It was a beautiful voice!

He was also a man of faith. He taught Sunday school at East Side Lutheran when he was younger. Later he and Linda found their church home at Springdale Lutheran, the little country church with a big heart. He had close relationships with several of the pastors who served there and was able to discuss the hard faith questions with them. Doug now knows all the answers straight from the source.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Linda Lund of Sioux Falls, SD; daughters, Suzan (Joseph Moser) Lund of Lincoln, NE, Patty (Terry) Walburg of Sioux Falls, SD, Brenda Smith (Bob Jensen) of Crooks, SD, and Christy Satter of Fountain Hills, AZ; his son, James Satter of Oakland, CA; six grandchildren, Tara Smith of Sioux Falls, SD, Taylor (Maca Escondrillas) Smith of Brookings, SD, Allison Hout of Sioux Falls, SD, Michael (Marissa) Hout of Sioux Falls, SD, Tucker (Julia) Smith of Westminster, CO, and Zoey Moser of Lincoln, NE; nine great-grandchildren; his brother, Tom (Ilene) Lund of Seneca, SC; sister-in-law, Judy Lund of Sioux Falls, SD; and a host of many other relatives and friends.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Gladys (Gruseth) Lund; his brother, Dennis Lund; and his grandson, Cody Smith.
