Vizio first made its reputation offering TVs at very affordable prices. In more recent years, though, they’ve risen to compete with other brands for their quality as well. The likes of Sony and Samsung might still make the best TVs on the market, but it’s hard to beat a Vizio in terms of value for the money. And while they still offer great cheap TVs, they now also make excellent OLED sets that cost less than those of their competitors. So if you are looking for a new TV (or to add a second TV), Vizio is a great brand to consider if you don’t want to break the bank.

What to Consider

TVs come in many sizes and price points these days, with a slew of features to consider. But as we’re only talking about Vizio TVs here, that helps narrow the field considerably. All Vizio TV use the Smartcast streaming platform and come with the company’s WatchFree app that includes 150 free channels. And the company has grouped its offerings into five series: D, V, M, P, and OLED, with each being subsequently higher quality (and more expensive). So if you know your budget and what size you need, your choice is almost made for you. That said, there are a few things you’ll want to consider before making your purchase.

Size

While you may be tempted to buy the biggest TV you can afford, there actually is a science to choosing the correct TV size. (And you may want to spend your dollars on picture quality rather than just screen real estate.) As a rule of thumb, your TV size should be half of the viewing distance. So if your sofa will be 10 feet (120 inches) from the TV, you should get a 60” TV. Too large a TV can overwhelm your room, while too small may not give you an optimal viewing experience.

Picture Quality

With Vizio offering 4K TVs at exceptional prices, you probably won’t consider their D-series of 1080p televisions unless you want a smaller, inexpensive set as a second TV. But other features than resolution (like HDR) contribute to picture quality. You’ll generally get what you pay for, and if you have the budget, an OLED will offer dramatically better quality than an LED set.

Gaming

If you plan to use your TV for gaming, you will want to be sure your TV is equipped to handle it. First, look for a refresh rate of 120Hz (as opposed to 60Hz), which will help reduce lag time. Vizio added OLED TVs to its lineup in 2020, offering 55” and 65” models at prices much lower than its competition. While certainly not cheap by any means, the 55” edition still gives you a lot of bang for your buck. Its 8 million self-illuminating pixels, IQ Ultra processor, and Dolby Vision HDR ensure a stunning picture, while you also get features like Bluetooth, voice control-compatibility, and Apple Airplay and Chromecast. Plus, its ProGaming™ Engine means 4K gaming at 120 fps. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better TV at a similar price.

The “V” in Vizio’s V-series could very well stand for “value.” The series’ selection of 4K sets live up to Vizio’s reputation for giving you a lot for your money. The 50” edition usually goes for around $300, which is a great price for a 4K TV of this size, but you also get plenty of features. It’s equipped with Dobly Vision HDR and HDR10+ for enhanced picture quality and WiFi 6E for added bandwidth for streaming, as well as Apple Airplay, Chromecast built-in, and Bluetooth compatibility. Gamers will also like the included AMD FreeSync and VRR.

The 65” model of Vizio’s P-series is equipped with Quantum Color, which produces more than a billion colors and greater saturation. Add in Dolby Vision HDR and a peak brightness of 1200 nits and this TV will look amazing no matter what you’re watching. But it is also particularly well-equipped for gaming. Like the OLED TV above, it allows you to play in 4K at 120 fps. Even better, though, it features AMD FreeSync Premium technology for smoother graphics and lower input lag. It’s a stunning TV no matter how you slice it, but its reasonable price tag makes it even more attractive.

The 75” edition of the Vizio’s P-series has the same features at the 65” edition — Quantum Color, Dolby Vision HDR, IQ Ultra processor, 1200-nit peak brightness, and even AMD FreeSync Premium — and thus the same superb picture quality. The added size and the TV’s ultra-thin bezel, though, make for a truly immersive viewing experience that can’t be beat at this price.

Vizio’s D-series features a selection of smaller TVs designed to look great in 1080p. And because you’re getting a smaller, non-4K TV, their prices are very easy on your wallet. The 43” model is a great choice as a second TV in the bedroom or for a college dorm. A 2022 CES Innovation Award winner, it’s not short on features. It comes with a Vizio Voice Remote, features Apple AirPlay and Chromecast built-in, and is Bluetooth compatible. It also has an IQ processor and WiFi 5 to ensure excellent streaming quality. And if you will be using it for gaming, it has AMD FreeSync and a V-Gaming Engine. All this for a price usually well under $300.

If you have the budget, you can’t do better than Vizio 65” OLED set. It delivers the picture quality you’d expect from an OLED, which is the result of 8 million self-illuminating pixels. Plus, you get features like Bluetooth, voice control-compatibility, and Apple Airplay and Chromecast built-in. With a ProGaming™ Engine, you can also game in 4K at 120fps. And though it’s not inexpensive, it’s still cheaper than most OLEDs of this size.

Occupying the space below P-series, the M-series offers just about all the features of the more premium range, but with a low price tag. You get Quantum color and the 1 billion colors it produces, as well HDR10 and Dolby Vision HDR, plus the connectivity features common to Vizio’s TVs. It does have a lesser refresh rate of 60Hz, compared to the P-series’ 120Hz, and it only has the regular version of AMD FreeSync. But if you aren’t a gamer in need of quick response time, these shortcoming shouldn’t be an issue. The 70” version is a particularly good value of square inches to the dollar.
