Subject: John DeereComputer Trak 250
Hey guys, only my 3rd year of farming and I bought a John Deere 7300 vacuum planter. It came with a monitor , but the harness had some broken wires so I redone them with the he existing harness. I am getting all lights on the sensors working , but the monitor is showing rows failed when I turn it in. My question is this normal since it's not planting , and also it doesn't have a speed sensor of any sorts, so will the monitor work or be beneficial without the speed sensor? I just want it to work to let me know if a chain jumps off etc... Thanks

The monitor has a set speed mode. You enter a speed manually. If you speed up or slow down the population will be off. I'm not sure on the first question. I would think the alarm goes off until it has seed going by the eye. If I remember right the lack of speed input will also trigger an alarm until you change to set speed mode. Good luck

It will show all rows failed until you start planting. As long as you have the wires spliced together and no bare spots touching each other you should be fine with the harness. As for the 250 monitor working without a gps or radar speed source, I know it will not show population, spacing, area, etc. information without it. The operators manual says that it will still monitor seed flow if it looses the speed source. If the rate in any row falls below 2 seeds per second, the row failed message will be displayed.

Advice: find a radar or the sky trac type gps hockey puck globes and use this for a cheap speed source. While the 250 monitor and deere seed tubes are low accuracy monitors they are still valuable tools used to set the vacuum pressure and monitor row populations.

Here is a link to ebay with one http://www.ebay.com/itm/AG-Express-GPS-Velocity-Speed-Sensor-Ground...

If you have any gps monitors they can be used to output a radar signal usually with an adapter and work well.

There is a separate manual for the monitor.....might try e-bay or someplace to find one....they come in handy.

What tractor are you mounting this on?
I have a 7300 12 x 30 vertical fold vac planter with lift assist, and I use the radar from the tractor (JD 8100), and the 250 monitor.

Yes, the rows will show fail when you turn it on- you're not planting and there are no seeds passing the eyes.

Turn the power on (with the tractor off so you can hear), drop a handful of corn or beans through the seed tube. You will hear the monitor chirp. This is how I check the sensors pre-season. You can use the tube brush to do the same thing by just "cleaning" the tube if you want, but I just use corn or beans.
There's also a setting that I had to tweak to get correct area calculation, but I can't remember off hand what it is, but not hard to find out if you need it.

That makes a lot of sense. It's going on a John Deere 4650. I will try dropping some seeds like you said, that's a great pre-plant idea.

Good comments on this thread. I will add that at start up, the monitor will take roll call of all sensors it "sees", if there are harness or sensor wiring problems, a "row sensor" failed message will appear. If all sensors are present, the "row failed" message displays.

I have a GPS hockey puck that was used very little that would sell reasonable if you want one. My email is [emailprotected]

If you use the Speed Set mode, I am pretty sure that each time you turn off the monitor, you will have to go back in when you turn it on to set up the Speed Set mode again. Also, the monitor needs to see 2 seeds per second to register that it is planting on a row. A good way to simulate seed drop is to use a long zip tie. Place it in the tube and twirl with your fingers quickly. EDIT: I just saw further down in the post that it will reset the speed mode when you turn the monitor off...sorry to state the obvious from the manual!
